My B-day in The High Atlas Mts.

Salaam Aleikum,
We arrived in Essaouira this afternoon after 2 nights in Tamatert, a small village in the mountains just up from Imlil. Our mountain stay was wonderful! We were dropped off in Imlil where we met our Berber guide/host then hiked about an hour to his home in Armed where we were treated to lunch w/ his wife, daughter and son. Their niece showed up for bday cake and we were dressed up in caftans and coal make up to celebrate.

After Laasan our guide spoke to us about the Quran and we had tea we hiked another hour past a waterfall and popular swimming hole then onto Douar Samra, our inn, where our luggage carried by mules met us.

We were tuckered out after hiking at +/- 6,000 feet and excited for our shower and delicious meal w/ our friends Nadia & Dijana and new British friends Paul & Alex. Given the cooler mountain weather we sat outside to enjoy our meal of kofta, garden veggies, mint tea, and fresh fruit plus yet another birthday cake, this one w/ a large firecracker as a candle!

Why thank God for Mohamed the guide?

Okay, so, w/o Mohamed we would have a) gotten terribly lost in a maze of souks, not to emerge again until next week or even a month from now b) paid double or more for anything we bought c) ate icky cookies instead of yummy ones d) taken 2-4-10 x as long to get to any of the tourist sights, especially those walking distance away e) been relentlessly hounded by shop salesmen and f) wandered into all the wrong stores just because the names were written in English a.k.a. tourist traps g) gotten run over by a bike/moped/donkey/car/pushcart and h) well, I could go on and on.  Anyway, after Mohamed's 2-day crash course in negotiating the medina I think the 4 of us will enjoy a navigational adventure to the gardens tomorrow and visit to the hammam, nap, maybe some henna and then a nice dinner, or whatever the day brings us.  Salaam alaikum! Getting ready for city, mountains & the sea

Destination:  Morocco 7/25-8/6 Welcome friends & family!  I thought I would share impressions and experiences about Rach's and my summer trip/s with you in one spot, specifically our blog spot! Immersed Part IV

Tomorrow, Sat. is a free day and afternoon hammam treatments at Hammam de la Rose just around the corner to our riad. Saw a public hammam on our tour of the souks, w/ the heating attendant next door minding the heat and steam for the baths and tagines of the locals dropped off earlier in the day to cook. An unwelcome surge of heat met us as we passed the separate men's and women's entries. We hurried on to enjoy the cooler shaded alleyways of the covered souks in the medina.
